Dao Mau in Vietnam

Gender Fluid Spirit Medium

On this trip, we learn to appreciate the inclusive Dao Mau folk religion in Vietnam. Dao Mau (the way of the mother) is commonly associated with spirit mediumship rituals known as Len Dong (going into trance).

The religion worships mother goddesses, and its practices have been inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. It boasts an impressive hierarchy of four immortals and more than 36 kings, saints, damsels, and semi-gods. Watch how its gender-bending spirit mediums reveal the fluidity of sexualities and the inclusivity of their faith.
